Miami Dolphins to interview Packers offensive coordinator

The Miami Dolphins will interview Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin for their head-coaching job but remain hopeful about their chances of luring former Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher.

Fisher interviewed for the St. Louis Rams job Thursday and is expected to decide where he will coach next season - likely either the Dolphins or Rams - in the next several days.

An official in contact with the Dolphins said at least one Dolphins official who participated in Tuesday's interview with Fisher emerged optimistic about Miami's chances because Fisher seemed very interested, the meeting went well, and because Fisher is aware that owner Stephen Ross does not plan to be outbid for his services.

But Fisher reportedly met Thursday in Denver with billionaire Rams owner Stan Kroenke, whose other U.S. sports interests (the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche) are based there. And Fisher is expected to consider the Rams' pitch.

Philbin's interview with the Dolphins, first reported Thursday by the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel, is expected to happen in the next two days. Though Packers coach Mike McCarthy calls the offensive plays, Philbin crafts the game plan. The Packers have finished in the top 10 in points and yards in each of Philbin's five seasons as coordinator.

"I think the world of Joe Philbin," McCarthy said this week. "The job that he's done here speaks for itself."

Philbin, 50, joined the Packers in 2003 as an assistant offensive line coach, then added tight ends coach to his duties the next two seasons, before spending one year as the team's offensive line coach. Before joining Green Bay, he was an offensive line coach at seven colleges, including Harvard and Iowa. Philbin interviewed for the Kansas City Chiefs job Wednesday night.

"Joe does a ton," Packers receiver Greg Jennings told reporters this week. "He runs all the walk-throughs, the meetings. All of that is Joe Philbin. He's comfortable being in front of the team. He's definitely fully capable of being a head coach."

Philbin would be the fourth person to interview for the Dolphins job, following Fisher, interim coach Todd Bowles and Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub.

Besides coaching star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Philbin also has helped develop backup Matt Flynn, who is expected to be a potential Dolphins target in free agency.

An official in contact with the Dolphins said general manager Jeff Ireland has steered Ross toward strongly considering NFL assistants who will work within an organizational structure. But Ireland has no issues with Fisher, who has been recommended to Ross by close friend and advisor Carl Peterson.

ROSS ADDRESSES PETERSON'S ROLE

• Ross told The Miami Herald on Thursday that Peterson "will not be joining the organization in any official capacity. It's not happening. He will continue to serve in an advisory role. I have an advisory committee and he is on that committee and he will remain on that committee." ESPN had reported recently that Ross would join the team as executive vice president/football operations.

• With Oklahoma's Landry Jones deciding to remain in school, no quarterback is projected to go in the range of Miami's first-round pick in the draft (which will be eighth or ninth) - assuming Baylor's Robert Griffin III goes sooner than that. Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill, Arizona's Nick Foles and Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden are second-round possibilities.
